A touch of Tamborine Magic
Hidden away in the Gold Coast’s
hinterland, is Tamborine Mountain
Distillery, Australia’s smallest operating
pot-still distillery. After their move from
Tasmania, the Ward family arrived to find
their new home had an over abundance of
fruit trees. Unable to sell the produce into
the market because it was grown naturally
and therefore not regulated, they had too
much of a good thing.
Alla Ward, the master distiller with her Baltic
roots, always had an interest in distillation
having grown up with a still gurgling away in the
kitchen. With that heritage in mind they set out to
create schnapps, vodkas, liqueurs and eauxde-
vie encompassing the crops available on the
property.
The resulting flavours honoured the true nature
of each and every ingredient without the need of
any artificial additives or preservatives – a taste
reinforced by the masses of loyal customers that
propelled this tiny family business into a popular
destination on the mountain.
Ten years on and they have established
a distillery of world renown with more
awards than any other Australian liquor
brand in history. With over 84
international awards, the most
impressive win was in 2007 when
Moulin Rooz absinthe received top
honours at the World Spirits
Competition in Austria, creating
history as the first Non-European
absinthe to win in the continent.
This highly prized distillery gives
us the opportunity to pour spirits
